Kenny graduated from Logan High School of La Crosse in 1980. Shortly after high school, Kenny entered the National Guard and was active for 5 years. After being honorably discharged he went to work at Northern Engraving in West Salem for a period of time, followed by a variety of other odd jobs.

Kenny was an avid sports enthusiast. His interests ranged from billiards and darts to baseball, football, and basketball. As a teen, he became a devoted Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Cubs fan and remained so throughout his life.
