Helen Nottestad, 86, of Westby, died Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Sample ImageHelen Evangeline Nottestad, age 86, of Westby, Wisconsin died on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Bethel Nursing Home.  Helen was born on July 10, 1931 to Harold and Emma (Johnson) Onshus.  She became a child of God August 16, 1931 and later reaffirmed her faith on September 29, 1946.  She was a lifelong member of North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church.  She attended the one-room Homstad School and was a member of the Westby High School class of 1949.  She graduated from the Vernon County Normal School in 1951 and taught school at Smith School until her marriage.  She was united in marriage to Alton Nottestad on May 24,1952.  She became a hardworking, equal partner, farm wife working side by side with Alton on the family farm.  She lived on the farm until becoming a resident at Bethel Home, Viroqua on January 15, 2018.

Helen was an active member of North Coon Prairie having served on the Church Council, teaching Sunday School, WELCA and the “Helping Hands” Circle, later becoming the Dorcas Circle.  She could be found planning the dinners and lunches with Aneda Mae and in the kitchen working at church functions. 

She is survived by two children, Larry and Linda (Brian) Thies all of Westby; two grandchildren:  Daniel (Alanna Eness) of Westby and Johanna (David) Jessee of Waumandee Wisconsin, sister in law Aneda Mae Onshus, nieces Dorothy (Anderson) Dahlen, Susan Onshus, special goddaughter Valborg Kvigne, and her dog Fawn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother in law Lyder (Ethel) Anderson brother Orland Onshus, nephews Michael Onshus, Monte Onshus, brother in law and sister in law Lloyd and Alice Nottestad and special lifelong friend Leona (Tyvand) Rundhaugen. 

The family would like to thank Rae Anne and Stefanie of Vernon Memorial Hospice for their compassionate care of Helen and her family.  Thank you to Lois Bakkestuen for her faithful calls and visits.  Thank you to Pastor Lori Betz, chaplain of Bethel Home for her ministry and visits.  Helen so appreciated being able to attend and participate in Sunday and Ash Wednesday services while at Bethel.  Thank you to Reverend John Stennes-Spidahl for his 22 years of ministry to Helen and her family.

Helen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She had a true love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Her loved ones will always remember her for her hard work and homemade meals.  She will be truly missed and always cherished by all who were blessed to know her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Friday, March 2, 2018 at the North Coon Prairie Church. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 AM till the time of service at 11.
