Richard “Dick” Bertram, age 73 of Gays Mills died early Tuesday morning, January 29, 2019. 


Sample ImageRichard A. ‘Dick’ Bertram ‘Captain’, age 73 of Gays Mills WI and North Fort Myers FL passed away Tuesday January 29th, 2019 at home with his best friend Xander by his side.

 

Dick was born October 15, 1945 to Bert Renora (Dommersnaes) Bertram in Monroe WI. He graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1963. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radio Dispatcher aboard the USS Suribachi from 1962 to 1966. Following his service to his country he received a bachelors degree in education from UW Platteville.

 

He was united in marriage to Lin Otto on January 5, 1974. They relocated to Orange County California to pursue his dream of becoming a Mortician. He received an Advanced Degree in Mortuary Science from Cypress College, Cypress CA. He served as a funeral director in CA, NV, and WI, following in the footsteps of his grandfather.

 

In 1992, Dick and his family moved to his hometown, Gays Mills, and bought the funeral home which originally belonged to his grandfather. Due to health reasons he retired from serving his community in 2012.

 

He was a die-hard Wisconsin sports fan. The Packers and Badgers were a couple of his greatest joys in life. He enjoyed his Bacardi and Coke and had many great memories of his Halvers happy hour crew in Gays Mills.

 

After moving to Gays Mills they bought their first summer home at Sports Unlimited Campground in Prairie du Chien. They spent over 20 years on the river and made many great friends who are now considered family. Dick was the campground Santa for many years and brought joy to many. It was here that he was given the nickname ‘Captain’ for being the pontoon river cruise leader and his love of the river.

 

Dick was a very active member of the community wherever he lived. He was, a charter member of the National Exchange Club in California, a past president and member of the Lions Club in Gays Mills, and also a board member of the Village of Gays Mills. He was, a life-member of the DAV, a member of the American Legion Post 52 LaCrosse, Post 308 Gays Mills and Post 0336 North Fort Myers.

 

Dick is survived by, his wife Lin of North Fort Myers. In January they celebrated 45 years of marriage. He is further survived by: his daughter Kim Jones of Gays Mills, his son Brad (Marsha) Bertram of Cashton. He is grandpa to Ally ((Mitchell), Wyatt and Gracie. Brad and Marsha are expecting his fourth grandchild in August, and Ally and Mitch are expecting his first great-grandson Leyton Michael in March. He is also survived by, his sisters Sandy and Shari (Frank) and many cousins.

Funeral Services for Dick will be held in August this summer. Date, time and place are yet to be determined, but will be announced.
