Sample ImageDavid Marshall Sorenson was born 09/23/1939 in rural Westby to Ted and Orna (Quain) Sorenson.  David lived on the Sorenson farm with his parents and sister Becky until Orna’s death in April of 1944 from Scarlett fever.  David and Becky then moved in with their grandparents Hans and Theresa Quain and Auntie My.

David attended Westby Schools and graduated in 1957.  During high school, David was very active in  sports, lettering in football, basketball, and track.  He was also an avid outdoorsman.  After graduation, David moved to Wyoming and worked on a cattle ranch as a cowboy for about 6 months.  He then moved back to Westby and worked for Taylor Lumber and followed Carroll Olson to Carroll’s Building Supply which was open until 1992, which would launch a career in the lumber and building materials business. They also started Cashton Building Supply.

Before and after retiring, Dave helped his sons in several of home remodeling and building projects.  David was also a rural mail carrier from  1994 to 2007.

David met the love of his life Carol Lee on his 23rd birthday in Cashton.  They were married less that 6 months later,, on March 2, 1963 before David had to report for the draft March 12th, 1963.  They were together when they could be while David was in training, until he was shipped overseas in September, 1963.  David and Carol’s first son, Mike, was born on 01/26/1964 while David was overseas. David met Mike in September 1964 when he returned from Vietnam.  Dean, their second son, was born in July of 1968.  Mike and Dean blessed grandma and grandpa with four grandchildren Meagan (Ryan) Conrad, Amanda, Danielle (Chris Hansen), and Matthew Sorenson.  They were also blessed with three great grandsons Gander, Graham, and Griffin Conrad. ”Uncle Doddie”  was also blessed with his nephew Steve Glunz and his special cousin Priscilla Midtlien.  David is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Auntie My, his sister Becky Glunz, his son Mike, and Mike’s stepdaughter Stephanie Haakenson.

Dave volunteered for the Westby Fire Department for 35 years, with 10 of these serving as the Fire Inspector. He was also very active in the American Legion, also serving  as a Commander or Adjutant at times, and  the Boy Scouts, the VFW and the church.

In his free time Dave really enjoyed the outdoors. Dave, Carol, and Robert Flugstad started a tradition of going up north on fishing trips that continued on with the whole family. The family fishing trips included baby sitters in the early years, and grandkids in the later years. There were also several fly-in and other fishing trips to Canada. The trips to Canada started with the Boy Scouts and continued for years. A couple of Dave’s favorite trips were a fly-in fishing trip with Mark and Kim, and the trip with just mom, dad and their sons.

Dave also really enjoyed hunting.  Dave took his boys hunting for animals, mushrooms, and much more when they were young, and continued on in the family for years. “Deer camp” at the old cabin out at Steve’s was one of the favorite traditions.  Dave also enjoyed hunting trips out West with his friends, Dick Erickson and Lincoln Stafslien.

In his later years when grandpa wasn’t able to do as much, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends who he dearly loved. Dave was very well liked around town especially at the Ski hill where he would often meet with his friends.
