Alf F. (Ferdinand for pre-WWI king of Prussia) Amundson, age 88 of Newry, was peacefully taken home and reunited with his beloved Margaret on Monday, February 26, 2007. He was the first born child of Knute and Katrina (Dacar) Amundson in Cashton on June 1, 1918. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Cashton. He attended Russel Valley School, walking through the woods and over hills with his school friend, Lawrence Frederick. With the depression era, high school days and playing basketball were cut short. Alf got a job as a farm hand away from home. Later he worked for Northern States Power Co., putting up some of the first poles for electric lines in the area. In 1941 he married his dancehall sweetheart, Margaret Werner who was from LaCrosse. Together they farmed for over 45 years in the Cashton area. Alf also did custom harvesting and bought tobacco for the P. Lorillard Co. Alf served on the Homstad School Board and the Immanuel (Moen) Cemetery Board, and enjoyed attending lutefisk dinners with his family and Delia Stendalen. He was a true and faithful husband to Margaret who had a lifetime of cancer issues. He took care of her needs until her last days in 1993. Since then, he has been self sufficient at his home in Newry. In later years he loved gardening and tending his grapes. He made hundreds of sandbakkles and many pineapple upside down cakes. He has had opportunities to enjoy his grandchildren and travel to Florida and Atlanta, GA. He will be remembered for his work ethic and quest for right. Alf leaves behind four children: Darrel of Cashton, Emily Guderyon of Hartland, Duane (Rita) of Prairie du Sac, and Elisa (Jeff) Moss of Holmen; his grandchildren: Margaret Guderyon of Milwaukee, John Guderyon of Atlanta, Hans Guderyon of Hartland, Kevin Amundson of Bowling Green, KY, Kara Amundson of Whitewater, Melissa and Rebecca Moss of Holmen; his sisters: Selma (Oscar) Hendrickson, Dorothy (Aaron) Roraff, and Gladys (Earl) Pralle. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret on Nov. 5, 1993; son-in-law, Mark Guderyon; brothers: Reuben, Erling, Victor, Donald and Elmer; his sister, Evelyn Currier. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate with burial in the Immanuel (Moen) Cemetery, rural Cashton. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Friday after 10:00 a.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Memorials may be given to the Bethel Butikk Foundation, Vernon Memorial Hospital.
