Charlene Hotlen, 72, of Viroqua, died Monday, April 2, 2018. Charlene was born on November 21, 1945 to Otto and Laura (Myhre) Dahl with her twin brother Charles. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of the Bad Axe Lutheran Church. Charlene graduated from Viroqua High School in May of 1963. She enjoyed babysitting and loved children. She was a hard worker and worked at many places including being an office assistant for Viroqua Telephone Co., waitressing at Borgens and Dunnums Cafes, La Crosse Footwear, and Farmco in Viroqua. She also worked as a dietary aid at the Vernon Memorial Hospital, which during her time there she was married to Howard Hotlen on December 19, 1970. To their union Charlene and Howard were blessed with three dearly loved sons: Matthew, Chad, and Lucas. Charlene was employed for about eight years for Bethel Home. During that time she worked for Bethel Home Helping Hands program, she filled the needs of several others throughout the county who were unable to care for themselves. Charlene was able to care for her mother during the time she had broken her hip. She was a certified part-time care provider at the Sunshine Day Care in Westby and the Viroqua Day Care Center. Charlene was a kind, caring mother who put others before herself. Her kids were her heart and soul. She worked hard doing tobacco and other farm work for many years. She was a loving wife to her husband. She was always there for you and could make friends easily and brought joy to those around her. Charlene is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Howard; her three sons: Matthew of Viroqua, Chad (Amanda) of Florida, and Lucas Hotlen of La Crosse; grandchildren: Trinity, Hunter and Hunters mother, Sabrina Lord, and Joey; great-grandson, James Pribble; all whom she loved dearly; sisters: Lillian (Orla) Young, Audrey Manders, Anita (Lester) Bina, all of Viroqua; brothers: Wesley (Annette) Dahl of Viroqua, David (Elaine) Dahl of La Crosse, Charles Dahl of Onalaska, and Verlyn (Mary) Dahl of Viroqua; brother-in-law, Charles Hotlen of Viroqua; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Laura Dahl; her father and mother-in-law, Jasel and Harriet Hotlen; brothers-in-law: William Manders, and Melvin Young; sister-in-law, Oknan Dahl; niece, Lori Hoyum; nephews: William "Billy" Manders and Mark Young; twin infant nephews: David and Duane Dahl, infant Gregory Eric Dahl, and Gregory David Dahl. Blessed be the memory of Charlene Phyllis Hotlen, a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Funeral Services will be held at 1pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 at the Bad Axe Lutheran Church. Pastor Don Greven will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 4-7pm at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home (123 W Decker, Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church on Friday from 12pm till the time of service at 1. In lieu of plants or flowers, memorials to the family are preferred.
