Doris E. Smith, age 76 of Gays Mills, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2010 Doris E. Smith, age 76 of Gays Mills, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2010 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on January 14, 1934 near Gays Mills, the daughter of Fred and Clarice (Lester) Bacon. She attended school at Gays Mills and part of one year at LaCrosse. On May 3, 1951 she married Paul "Bud" Smith and they farmed in the area until shortly after his death on August 18, 1977. Doris was employed at Pine Grove Nursing Home for eight years and for many years at the Unique Caf in Boscobel. She also worked at Center Lanes Courtyard in Richland Center until it burned in 2007. She is survived by her five children: Joanne Olson of Ocala, FL, Michael of Soldiers Grove, Beverly (Marvin) Caley of rural Viroqua, David (Vicki) of Muscoda, and Dianne (Jos) Mondragon of Gotham; 15 grandchildren: Ryan, Aaron and Andrea Olson, Julie and Cory Smith, Sheryl (Mark) Haakenson, Michelle, Casey, (Beth) and Doug Caley, Justin,and Brittanie Smith, Steffen Hamby and Iviannah Smith, Cristian and Kassandra Mondragon; 10 great-grandchildren: Kaleb Smith, Kaden and McKenna Krambeer, Deekin and Devlin Smith, Roxanna, April, Shawnna and Ryan Haakenson, and Gracie Caley; she is also survived by one sister, Irene Rhodes of Onalaska and one brother, Merlin Bacon of Hub City and Racine; also many nieces and nephews; special friends from the Courtyard and Unique Caf; and a very good friend from school days, Pat Garvey. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Marie Gabel of Seattle, WA, LaVonne Stussy of Gays Mills, Patricia in infancy; two brothers: Leslie of Faribault, MN and Archie in infancy. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren: The vacations they took together were very special to her. Her flowers and the many birds she fed were her favorite pastimes at her home and she enjoyed the deer that came to her crab apple tree in the yard and the four pheasants that came one winter when the snow was deep. Doris enjoyed reading, watching TV and playing with her dog, Lola. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dommersnaes-Bertram Funeral Home in Gays Mills with Pastor Grant VanLishout officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 10 until the time of service at the Dommersnaes-Bertram Funeral Home in Gays Mills. The Dommersnaes-Bertram Funeral Home of Gays Mills is serving the family.
