Howard Mathison, 83, of Coon Valley, died, Friday, July 31, 2015. Howard M. Mathison, age 83, of Coon Valley, died July 31, 2015. He was born on September 22, 1931 in LaCrosse to Tilford and Alice (Knutson) Mathison. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the Coon Valley American Legion Post 116. He was also a lifetime member of Vang Lutheran Church and the Coon Valley Conservation Club. On October 16, 1976, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Myhre and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1989. Howard was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and was a hard working farmer and also liked to fish. He loved dancing, especially at the Concordia in La Crosse and enjoyed following the Coon Valley and Chaseburg Blues ball team. He is survived by his son, Mark of Viroqua; two brothers, Carlyle (Phyllis) Mathison of Coon Valley and Thomas (Pat) Mathison of Coon Valley; two sisters, Alvina (Alfred) Contarino of Ventura, CA and Dorothy Clemment of Holmen; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his companion and friend of 23 years, Joyce Ekern of LaCrosse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, and his brother-in-law, Virgil Clemment. Blessed be our memory of Howard Mathison. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vang Lutheran Church with Pastor John Dumke officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at church.
