Lavern Kilmer, 78, of Viroqua died Tuesday, April 2, 2013. Lavern M. Kilmer, 78, of Viroqua, passed away peacefully April 2, at 8:00 pm, 2013. His wife of 53 years was by his side as he took his final breath to be with his Lord. Lavern was born November 24, 1934 in Springville, WI, to Clarence and Thelma (Larson) Kilmer. He was baptized and confirmed at the Springville Methodist Church. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1954. He then went to Janesville, WI and worked at Fisher Body for many years. Lavern always enjoyed working on cars and returned to Viroqua to work for McClurg Motors and later worked for Jim Olson at the Ford Garage. He also served in the U.S. Army with duty in Fort Leonard Wood and Washington and was a member of the Viroqua unit of the Wisconsin Nation Guard following his military service. He married Betty Harris on June 7, 1959. Lavern loved to travel with his wife Betty and they visited many parts of the world. Their favorite was Australia. Laverne loved to fix things and had a special talent for working on tractors and many things in the house and farm. He was a member of Zion Church and had been a member of Viroqua Eagles where he loved to flip pancakes at the telethon. He was a member of Chaseburg Rod and Gun Club for many years. He was also a member of A.R.T.T. and cooked at concessions at the Temple Theater. He also loved to hunt and fish and go boating on the Mississippi river for many years. Lavern was on the council at church and did the cemetery. Laverne was a good friend, father and husband. Blessed be our memory of Lavern Kilmer. Lavern is survived by his wife Betty; one son Bruce (Loretta) Kilmer of Chaseburg; three brothers, Myron (Nancy) of Arizona; David of Stoddard and his son Perry (Lisa); Jerry (Gloria) Kilmer of Viroqua and children Michael (Diane), Kevin and Peggy. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 8th 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Viroqua. Pastor Pete Beckstrand will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 3 on Sunday afternoon at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St, (Hwy 56), in Viroqua. Friends may also call on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
