Lillian A Hanson

September 30, 1922 — February 7, 2015

Lillian Alvina Hanson, 92, of Viroqua died on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. Lillian was born at home to Albert and Lena (Erickson) Fladhammer on September 30, 1922. She attended the Red Mound School and later attended Viroqua High School. She worked in Chicago for a time, but returned and was married to Enar Hanson on May 10, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church by Pastor D.T. Borgen. He had also baptized and confirmed Lillian. She and Enar were dairy and tobacco farmers on the Hanson family farm where they raised their three children. In 1968 they moved to a smaller farm close to Viroqua when their son Tom purchased the home farm. At this time, Lillian began working at Bethel Home in the dietary department. They also bought an R.V. and enjoyed traveling, camping and visiting relatives and friends. Lillian was a member of the ELCA at Zion Lutheran Church where she had been the president and secretary several times. She enjoyed being a member of the Hannah Circle and had taught Sunday school in her earlier years. She was a woman of strong faith in God and was always concerned about helping others. Lillian loved gardening and flowers and was a member of the Viroqua Garden Club. Many hours were spent canning and freezing vegetables from her garden and making several varieties of pickles, jams and sauces. Her bright green chunk pickles were the favorite of many. She was a wonderful cook and baker. It was not an option to go to her home and not eat. You left well-fed and full. In 2005 Lillian moved to Maplewood Terrace in Viroqua. She made some new friends, enjoyed the staff, and was busy and content there. As it had been during her whole life, she was most happy when she was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Lillian had been a devoted caregiver for her daughter and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Lillian is survived by one son, Elvin "Beannie" (Terri) Hanson of Viroqua; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hanson of Viroqua; three grandsons, Eric (Christine) Hanson of Eau Claire, WI, Layne (Janette) Hanson of Viroqua, Aaron (Angie) Hanson of Viroqua; and one granddaughter, Stacie (Randy) Giraud of Sparta, WI. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Mallory, Mitchell, Grant, Gradyn and Matthew Hanson, Alex Burke; step great-grandchildren, Nick (Kelsey), Randall and Schannel Giraud; step great-great-grandchildren, Grace and Kalli Giraud. She is also survived by one sister, Mathilda Hass; nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 54 years; son, Thomas Hanson; daughter, Lois Hass; daughter-in-law, Joy Hanson; brothers, Alfred, Lawrence and Tilman; and sister, Caroline Hanson. The family would like to thank the staff at Maplewood Terrace and Bethel Home for the loving care and friendship given to Lillian. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church. Pastor Peter Beckstrand will officiate with burial to follow in the Zion Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St., (Hwy 56) in Viroqua and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
