Maria U. (Lopez) Getter, age 89 of Viroqua, died Sunday, March 23, 2008. Maria U. (Lopez) Getter, age 89 of Viroqua, died peacefully surrounded by her family Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua where she had been a resident since November 9, 2007. She was born November 29, 1918 in Silverton, Colorado daughter of Florentino and Emiliana Lopez. She married Arthur S. Getter on January 30, 1949. They made their home in Viroqua for the past 22 years; prior to that, they lived 30 years in Rochelle, Illinois until Arthur's retirement. Maria worked as a housewife and mother. She loved crocheting, animals and reading; but, most of all, she was a very spiritual person. Maria was a perpetually friendly, congenial, altruistic and gentle person and a loving mother. Maria will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered. Maria is survived by her husband, Arthur; two children: Marita (Gary) Johnson of Janesville, Wisconsin; Jerome (Carol) Getter of Oak Park, Illinois; one grandson, Aaron Johnson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; numerous nieces, nephews and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Tony and Max Lopez; and three sisters: Rebecca and Tillie Lopez and Ruth Arellano. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Vernon Manor and Tamsen Morgan of Hirsch Clinic for their wonderful care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Robert J. Cook will celebrate the Mass with burial in the Liberty Pole Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 from 9:30 10:30 a.m. at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Vernon Manor in Viroqua or The American Diabetes Association. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
