Richard E. "Snuffy" Mellem, February 24, 2005 Richard E. "Snuffy" Mellem, age 82 of Ferryville, died Thursday, February 24, 2005 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. He was born on November 20, 1922 in Ferryville, to Leonard and Alice (Sidie) Mellem. On December 19, 1945 he was united in marriage to Bernice Arnold. He lived in the Ferryville area all of his life with the exception of two years spent in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Richard was a farmer, welder and milk hauler. He also was a log hauler and enjoyed cutting wood, having cut and split a semi load of wood by himself in one week. Richard was a very good dancer and will also be remembered for his generosity. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Bernice, he is survived by two sons: Randy (Cheryl) Mellem of Cashton and Richard Mellem, Jr. of Ferryville; son-in-law, Robert Protsman of Adams, Wis; 10 grandchildren: Rebecca, Jeff, Nicole, Tricia, Troy, Jason, Clayton, Kenneth, Jan, and Jon; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Kermit Mellem and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Clifford, Tilman and Robert; and his daughter, Janet Rae Protsman in 1997.
