Alice Mae Henden, age 85, of Viroqua, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Vernon Manor. She was born on June 25, 1938, to the late Oswald and Sylvia (Wedeberg) Bay in La Crosse. Alice attended and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1955.
After graduating, she lived and worked in La Crosse for three years until moving back to the area to marry the love of her life, Dwain Henden on May 17, 1958, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. Side by side, Alice and Dwain were dairy farmers and raised their family on the home farm. Alice and Dwain moved to a farm on Nottingham Ridge in 1990, and in 2011, they purchased their home in Viroqua.
Alice spent many years being very active in Homemakers, the National Farmers’ Organization, and as a devoted member of the Viroqua Church of Christ. She enjoyed her garden and raising beautiful flowers which she proudly entered at the Vernon County Fair. Another past time she enjoyed was playing games and cards with her family. While Alice’s children were working, she was devoted to raising the local grandchildren to make sure they always had a safe place to stay.
Alice is survived by her children: Allan (Alan Scott) Henden, Diane (Bryan) Myers, Renee Randolph, Linda (Scott) Mustio, and Philip (Jacinta) Henden; grandchildren: Angela (Eric) Riedeman, Shannon (Wyatt) Drake-Buhr, Bryce (Melissa) Myers, Matthew (Lynn) Mustio, Mark (Brandy) Mustio, Blake (Brooke) Myers, Hannah (Jordan) Magelssen, Andrew (Michaela) Randolph, Cosette (Eldon) Henthorne, Brandon (Sara) Myers, Jared Henden, Jacob (Nay Win) Henden, and Abigail (Jordan) Landers; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Gundi Bay, Sherry Bay, Evelyn Bay, and Sally Bay; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dwain; siblings: Orville, Shirley (William) Proksch, Kenneth, Earl, and Donald; and many aunts and uncles.
The family extends their deep appreciation to Vernon Manor and their staff, who lovingly cared for Alice during her time there.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Viroqua Church of Christ or Vernon County Agricultural Society in Alice’s memory.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Viroqua Church of Christ. Pastor Andrew Pratt will officiate. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Alice will be laid to rest at the Viroqua Cemetery next to her husband.
