Alice Olson, 92, of rural Soldiers Grove died Thursday, July 18, 2013. Alice Olivia (Iverson) Olson, 92, of Johnstown Valley near Soldiers Grove, WI passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 18, 2013 at her home. Alice was born in the summer kitchen on her family farm, located near Mt. Sterling, WI, on February 5, 1921 to Martin and Elsie (Helgeson) Iverson. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church. She was a lifelong, active member of WELCA, and served as treasurer for many years. She was a talented seamstress, and loved to quilt and crochet. She attended the Girdler School. As a young woman, Alice was known for helping in the homes of new mothers. On April 22, 1944 she married Thomas Olson. They farmed all their married life, raising dairy cows, tobacco, ducks and chickens. She had a great love of animals as witnessed by her surviving cat of 23 years, Tina, and two orphan cats Sophie and Snoopy. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Olson, her parents, Martin and Elsie Iverson, her sisters, Gladys Molldrem of Gays Mills, and Evelyn Hoffland of Janesville, WI Survivors include three sisters, Nora Sherry Olson of Soldiers Grove, Stella Wee of West Salem, and Margaret Halverson of Waukon, Iowa, who knew her as LaLa. She is also survived by a sister in law Ruth Fortney, and a brother in law, Melvin Olson, both of Soldiers Grove, 29 nieces and nephews and 57 great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, July 22, 2013, at Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church, with visitation at the church from 9 to 11 am. Pastor Nile Sandeen will officiate. A special thank you to her great niece Jennifer Severson, who was her caregiver and companion and made it possible for Alice to remain in her home and die surrounded by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be given to Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church or Vernon Memorial Hospice. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Gays Mills is serving the family.
