Alton Oliver Berger 91, of Westby died Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Alton Oliver Berger 91, of Westby died Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Alton Oliver Berger 91, of Westby passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Norseland Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He was born April 23, 1922 in the Township of Coon, Vernon County, Wisconsin to Albert and Olga (Rogstad)Berger. He attended Local Country Grade Schools. He was baptized and confirmed at Coon Valley Lutheran Church, and was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Westby. On September 19, 1942, he married Rhodia Solverson in Viroqua, Wisconsin. He was drafted into the United States Army and served his Country in World War II with the 96th Infintry Division and was Deployed to the Philippine Islands. He received a Purple Heart from battles fought in Okinowa. After discharge he returned to Westby area and farmed for many years. Alton owned and ran a Pool Hall in Westby for several years. Alton retired from farming and started a new career driving school bus for the Westby Area School District for many years and enjoyed the kids on his route's. He retired for the second time, but quickly went back to work as a Crossing Guard for the School District. He spent his retirement years watching sports, traveling to the Army reunions, and later in life loved to go sightseeing with his family members. Alton especially like to spend time sneaking treats to all his family members pets. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Forgien Wars and the Eagles Club. Survivors include his three sons: Allen (Mary Nelson) of Westby, Wayne (Susan) of Hatfield, and Monte (Lois) of Westby; eleven grandchildren: Lisa Berger (Kevin) Tucker, Dawn (Scott) Konze, Aaron (Carrie) Berger, John (Holly) Berger, Mike (Rebecca) Berger, Katie (Justin) Fleischman, Greg (Crystal) Anderson, Travis (Jennifer) Anderson, Matt (Linda) Berger, Tricia (John) Crowley, and Tom (Theresa) Berger; twenty three great grandchildren: Arielle, Liv, Annika, Henry, Charles, Leo, Will, Mason, Wesley, Ella, Nora, Ryan, Megan, Rachel, Colin, Tessa, Gabe, Emily, Jacob, Jessica, Connor, Hunter and Colton. He was preceded in death by his wife Rhodia, his parents: Albert and Olga, his brother Alvin, his sister Lylas, his daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Loren Anderson, and daughter-in-law Judy (Perkins) Berger. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor John Dumke will officiate with burial to follow in Our Saviors Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 until the time of the services at 11. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
