Alvin M. Gald, age 82 of Viroqua, died Wednesday evening, January 31, 2007 Alvin M. Gald, age 82 of Viroqua, died and went home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening, January 31, 2007 in LaCrosse after a courageous three week battle following surgical complications. He was born on August 14, 1924 in Vernon County Wisconsin the son of Alfred and Margaret (Skrede) Gald. He grew up on a farm and after high school was inducted into the Army, serving in Japan during WWII. He began carpentry, construction and cabinet-making at a young age, which continued the rest of his life. It was his lifes work, and his passion. Alvin was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #138, VFW and Eagles, all in Viroqua. Alvins hobbies included deer hunting in Northern Wisconsin, grape growing and wine-making, restoring antique pump organs, and playing cards. Alvin also enjoyed baseball, traveling to Norway, and in his younger years, boating and dancing. Alvin was appreciated for his optimism, generosity, fortitude and a uniquely clever wit. Alvins survivors include his wife, Mallie (Offerdahl) Gald; three daughters: Charlene (Lyder) Gulbrandsen of Stillwater, MN, Linda (Robert) Becker of Sumner, Iowa, and Shari Gald of Waukesha, WI; six grandchildren: Paul and Peter Gulbrandsen, Annie Dell-Gulbrandsen, Leigh Ann, Erin, and Robert Becker; one great-grandchild, Atticus; two sisters: Marceille Slette of Viroqua, and Margelyn Gay of Canfield, OH; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by two nephews: David Ostrem and James Gay. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Lindsay Paul Jordan will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday after 12:00 noon at the church. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
