Anna Mae (Klema) Krause of rural Viroqua passed away peacefully with family at her side on January 27, 2026, at the age of 100 after a brief illness. She was a resident at Bethel Oaks Assisted Living facility this last year.
Born April 1, 1925, to Charles & Elizabeth (Stluka) Klema in Wauzeka, WI, she grew up on a farm on Shanghai Ridge. She graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1943 and then attended Vernon County Normal School from 1943-1945; she taught at a rural school for 3 years. Marrying John Krause on July 15, 1948, she became a farmer's wife. After his death on January 29, 1967, at the age of 42, she raised their seven children on her own. She not only provided for her family’s needs, but also modeled self-reliance, faith, and resilience.
She graduated with a BA in Elementary Education from UW – La Crosse in 1970 and was proud to receive her college degree before her children. Her creativity was expressed through her landscape paintings, her calligraphy, and her quilting; especially enjoying weekly quilting with her church group. She loved living surrounded by nature, tending her flowers, feeding & watching birds, raising a vegetable garden and processing the food from it.
