Arlene R. Wistenberg

November 21, 1921 — October 6, 2023

Arlene Wistenberg, age 101, of Viroqua, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023, at her home in Viroqua. Arlene was born in La Farge on November 21, 1921, to Emma and Herman Abelt. She graduated from La Farge High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and graduated from the Vernon County Normal School. She was married to Bob Carpenter and later, to Leslie Wistenberg. She had two children, Bruce and Lexy. Her occupations through the years included teaching elementary school briefly, owning and operating The Cash Store grocery in La Farge, working at the Register of Deeds office, and working at the upper elementary school in Viroqua. She always loved her work and especially working with all the students and staff at the school.

She enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening, watching the Packers, organizing the football pools at work, and attending home and away high school sporting events for many years. More recently, she enjoyed the daily word jumbles and word searches. Some of her words were quite inventive at times and gave everyone a good chuckle. She was so friendly, inquisitive, and interested in people and was always ready with a funny story from her past – usually about La Farge. We will miss her homemade fudge, chocolate ball cookies, angel food cake, and butterscotch pies; but most of all, her laugh and wonderful love.

She is survived by her son, Bruce Carpenter, daughter, Lexy (Joe Nepsa) Wistenberg; grandson, Joey Nepsa; nephews and nieces, Donny (Diane) Burnard, Carla Milne, Andrea Schaack, Nick (Kristine) Burnard, Barb Suech, Lisa (Darcy) Olson, Steve (Monica) Olson, Roberta (Mike) Neupert, Dixie (Wistenberg) Showen, and Phillip (Pat) Wistenberg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie Wistenberg; daughter-in-law, Jean Miller-Carpenter; sisters, Doris (Herb) Olson and Muriel Burnard; niece, Debbie Liebakken; nephews, Jeff Burnard, Verl Poole, and Carl Poole; nieces, Judi (Wistenberg) Ziegelmann, Jeanie Hellwig, Janet Nedrelo; brothers-in-law, Adolph (Flossie)Wistenberg, Emil (Cora) Wistenberg, Walter (Geneva) Wistenberg, and Henry (Mary) Wistenberg; and sister-in-law, Clara (Verl) Poole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

We are grateful for all the help from St. Croix Hospice over the past three years. Their whole staff helped us immensely and words cannot express how much their care meant to Mom and us. Special thanks to Lori and Grace for all the time they spent with our family and how comforting they have been through everything.
