Arthur S. Getter

Arthur S. Getter, 92, of Viroqua, WI died on April 17, 2014, Arthur was born June 20, 1921 in Viroqua, WI; son of James and Luzella Getter. He grew up on the family farm, graduating from Viroqua High School in 1939, where he earned a golden glove award for boxing; he continued his education at Wisconsin Business University in La Crosse graduating in 1940. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946; after which, he worked in Tulsa, OK in the Engineering Department of the U.S. Engineers; thereafter, working at the Los Alamos Nuclear Plant as a War Assets Administrator. While living and working in Santa Fe, NM, Arthur married Maria Lopez January 30, 1949. Subsequently, they resided in Rockford, IL; Arthur working at National Lock, where he was a Union Steward until moving in 1954 to Viroqua to help with the family farm. In 1957, Arthur and Maria and their two children moved to Rochelle, IL where Arthur worked 29 years at Del Monte as a Quality Control Inspector, also serving as recording secretary for the local union office, until retiring in 1986; at which time, he and Maria moved back to Viroqua. Arthur had an inquisitive mind and was an avid reader, becoming self-educated in many areas of expertise. He was particularly good with math and had a sharp memory. His interests included current events, history, science, auto mechanical repair and gardening to name a few. He was an avid sports fan: Enjoying watching football, baseball and boxing. Arthur is survived by: Two children, Marita (Gary) Johnson, Janesville, WI; Jerome (Carol) Getter, Oak Park, IL; grandson Aaron S. Johnson, Elk Grove Village, IL; and, sister-in-law Doris (Walter) Getter, Rockford, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife Maria in 2008, his brother Walter and parents. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Lucas Readinger, M.D., Tamsen Morgan, PA-C, the staff at Maplewood Assisted Living, and the 2nd floor staff at Bethel Home for their care and support over the years. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church; 400 Congress Ave, Viroqua, WI; with Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m. Monsignor Francis Abuah Quansah will officiate. Burial will be at the Liberty Pole Cemetery with full military honors presentation and luncheon to follow. Arthur had a compassionate heart and was devoted to charities such as Disabled Veterans, The American Diabetes Association, and Native American Youth. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the above charities would be appreciated. Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
