Atley H. Olson, 78 of Viroqua died Monday, November 28, 2011. Atley Olson, 78 of Viroqua passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011 after a short stay at Vernon Manor Nursing Home while battling brain cancer. He was surrounded by family.He was born April 19, 1933 in Viroqua, WI, to Alice Olson. He attended Viroqua Area Schools and started working on farms at a young age. He was drafted into the US Army in 1953 and was stationed in Panama. He received an honorable discharge in 1955. He was married on March 29, 1958 to Rita Thompson. He was a jack of many trades. He raised tobacco, trimmed trees, roofed and painted houses. He was an avid NASCAR and Green Bay Packer Fan. He enjoyed Country music and was known for singing "Your Cheatin Heart". Atley is survived by his wife, Rita; two sons: Al and Roger; three daughters: Lori (Jim) Houghtaling, Lisa (Mike) Bolstad and Sherri (Mark) Everson; nine grandchildren: Heather (Mark) Bergman, Amanda (Matt) Hegstrom, Travis and Malory Bolstad, Boomer (Amy) Olson, Andrew (Megan Steiner) Everson, Jarod Houghtaling, Cody and Rachel Olson. He had two great-grandsons: Maddox and Mason Bergman. He is also survived by one sister, Beatrice Mahan of Kenosha; three half-sisters: Anne Alleman, Linda Schluter and Karen Spreuer; one sister-in-law, Lila Bolstad; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice; step-father. Marvin Widner; father and mother-in-law, Truman and Ione Thompson; grandson, Alex Houghtaling; step-granddaughter, Kristy Houghtaling; half-brother, Rodney Widner; daughter-in-law, Judy Olson; brother-in-laws: John Mahan, Dale Helgeson and Don Bolstad; and sister-in-law. Arlene Helgeson. Blessed be his memory. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011 at Viroqua United Methodist Church. Pastor Ethan Larson will officiate with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 to 7 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (hwy 56), in Viroqua. Friends may also call on Friday from 10 until time of service at the church. In Lieu of Flowers or Plants, memorial contributions may be made to Vernon Memorial Hospice House, The American Cancer Society, or Vernon Manor Nursing Home.The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
