Bernadine Mae Appleman, a cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on May 5, 1930, in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, to William and Almeda (Parker) Steinmetz, Bernadine's life was filled with love of family and simple joys.
Her journey began in the rolling hills of Hillsboro, WI, where she was raised, graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1949. She later became the loving wife of Calvin Appleman on April 21, 1951, who preceded her in death on March 28, 2014. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and love.
Bernadine's life was a canvas of care and nurturing. She created a home that was a place of comfort for all who entered. Her hands, always busy, tended to her garden with the same love she showed her family, coaxing petunias into bloom and providing sustenance for the birds she so enjoyed watching and feeding.
Bernadine's passions extended beyond the garden to the card table, where she was known for her sharp mind and playful spirit. Her laughter was a familiar sound to those who played alongside her, and her presence will be deeply missed at the table.
Her love for conversation was evident to anyone who knew her, as she cherished her time on the phone, connecting with friends and family, and sharing stories. These moments of connection were a source of great joy for Bernadine and those on the other end of the line.
Bernadine is survived by her children, Delores, Gary, and David (Marla) Appleman; grandchildren, Aaron (Roni) Appleman and Brittany (Chad) Chalupecky, and her great-grandchildren, Joey and Jack. She also held a special place in her heart for her honorary granddaughter, Macs Strothman, as well as her special “phone friends.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her great-grandson, Mason Jon. Bernadine was the last surviving sibling of her family, predeceased by her brother, Walter (Joan) Steinmetz, and sisters, Irma (Bill) Gilman and Marjorie (Al) Rice.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Free Methodist Church in La Farge. A visitation will take place from 9:00 AM until the time of services. Online condolences may be offered at vossfh.com.
