Beverly (Henkel) Backhaus, 87, of La Crosse died on Friday, December 7, 2012. Beverly L. (Henkel) Backhaus, 87 of La Crosse, formerly of De Soto, died Friday, December 7, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital with her family by her side. She was born on August 7, 1925 to Harry Sr. and Marjorie Arnold in Harvey, Illinois. She married Harold Henkel Sr. on August 22, 1943 who passed away on July 26, 1974. She married Delmer Backhaus on August 27, 1983. He died on November 17, 2007. Bev and Harold owned several businesses in De Soto; a restaurant, tavern, appliance store and coffee shop where many friends would gather for coffee and cards. She enjoyed Bingo, puzzling, crocheting, Monday shopping trips with Deb and traveling the countryside with Delmer. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Bev loved her Bethany on Cass family. She would often say how they took such good care of her and how much she loved living there. Bev is survived by her children, Harold Jr. (Penny) Henkel of De Soto WI, Robert (Jan) Henkel of Lansing, IA, Debra (Al) Trussoni of Genoa,WI and Penny (Dale) Piurkowski of Stoddard, WI; stepchildren, Carol (Lyle) Schaal, Guttenberg, IA, Dan (Kim) Backhaus of La Crosse, WI; grandchildren, Jana (Scott) Schoh, Robert Jr. (Amy) Henkel, Rob Henkel, Bill Henkel, Nikki (Ryan) Venner, Jason (Amy) Piurkowski; great-grandchildren, Blake and Maison Schoh, Britney Henkel, Olivia, Austin and Wyatt Henkel, Brock, Camryn and Kylee Venner, Grace and Josie Piurkowski; sisters, Geri Wyburn, Ruth (Robert) Draka, Joyce (Roger) Hoium; brother-in-law Harlan Backhaus and many nieces and nephews. Besides Harold Sr. and Delmer, she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Harry (Pauline) Arnold Jr. and Bernice (Richard) Mellem; brother-in-law Earl Wyburn as well as nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, at De Soto Lutheran Church. Pastor Doug Andersen will ofciate with burial in the De Soto Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at De Soto Lutheran Church. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11. In lieu of owers and plants, memorial contributions may be made to the De Soto Lutheran Church. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of De Soto is serving the family.
