Catherine C. Steiger, 71, of LaCrosse died Saturday, February 19, 2011 Catheine C. Steiger, 71, of La Crosse died peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at St. Josephs Rehab Center in La Crosse with her family by her side. Catherine was born in Bangor, WI on October 1, 1939 to Oscar and Mary (Pedersen) Johnson. On June 20, 1959 she was united in marriage to Robert A. Steiger. In her younger years she used to sing 'live' on KWNO Radio in Winona while Bob would play guitar. Catherine also played guitar and sang on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. She met many famous Country Western Stars personally: Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Minnie Pearl, Jean Shepard, Roy Acuff, Marty Robbins, Hank Snow and Ernest Tubbs to name a few. She was an extremely talented seamstress who also enjoyed knitting and crafts. Catherine worked for 18 years at the Ben Franklin store in The Village. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Robert; 5 children Robert Scott (Joan) of La Crescent, Randy of Stoddard, Rodney (Juliet) of LaCrosse, Carol (Gary) Kasten of La Crescent, Carrie (Steve) Johnson of Elgin, IL; sister Sylvia Berg of West Salem; brothers-in-law Kenneth (Kay) Steiger, Roger (Phyllis) Steiger; Aunt Gertie Johnson, many nieces and nephews; 11 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Virgil and Robert Johnson; sister Phyllis Saley; sister-in-law Marietta Steiger. A special thanks to St. Joe's Rehab. Center for her care. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 630 West Avenue South, in La Crosse. Pastor John Parkyn will officiate. Friends may call on Wednesday at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
