Charles A. Lind

March 30, 1929 — October 26, 2024

Charles A. Lind of rural Viroqua passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, at the age of 95, at Bethel Oaks Memory Care in Viroqua, WI.

Charles was born on March 30, 1929, to Adolph and Alice (Fauske) Lind at the family farm on West 56. He attended Colonel May country school through 8th grade and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1947. After high school, Charles worked alongside his dad on the family farm. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Germany to help with the relief efforts after World War II as a radio operator. He finished his tour at the rank of Private First Class, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and earned special recognition as a Sharpshooter.

During his tour, he proposed to his bride Joanne (Aspenson) and they were married December 21, 1955 during a furlough. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he came back to the home dairy farm and worked alongside his dad, uncles and hired hands. He and Joanne operated the family farm for over 40 years and raised their 7 children: Janice, Carl (Joan Cook), Eric (Brenda Olson), James, Mary (Andrew Raddant), Amy (Patrick Penchi) and Mark.

Charles was a steadfast and lifelong member of Bad Axe Church. Charles was focused on sharing his faith with others in words and deeds, the good news of Jesus Christ as his personal savior, and helping others to Christianity. He held various offices as a deacon or council member, taught Sunday school, led Family and Youth Leagues, was a steady bible study member and rarely missed any activity that happened at Bad Axe. He was also a member of the West Prairie Singers and enjoyed singing and playing the piano while worshiping God. His world was his faith and his family.

Upon retirement in 1994, Charles sold the dairy cows and continued to put in crops until he and Joanne moved to Viroqua in 2000 to live on Garfield Street. They enjoyed retirement years of traveling to visit their children, visiting various parts of the United States, and continuing to volunteer at the Bethel Home and within the community. Charles mourned the loss of Joanne who he was married to for 55 years. He continued to live in town until 2019 when he moved to an assisted living facility in La Crosse, Shelby Terrace. A short time after that, he had an accident and broke his hip and was not able to return to independent living. Since, he lived in BSJ, Bethel Home, Aspen Place and now Bethel Oaks where he received excellent care at all establishments.

He is survived by his 7 children; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Charles always loved having a large family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, John and Richard (Dottie); one sister, Janice; one grandson Alan Lind; and his beloved wife Joanne. Blessed be their memory.

Thank you to Bethel Home and Services and St. Croix Hospice for his end-of-life care.
