Chester R. Ostrem, age 81, of Viroqua, died October 4, 2016 surrounded by family, loved ones and caregivers at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua. Chester R Ostrem, 81, of Viroqua, passed away on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016, at the Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 9th, 1935, in Viroqua, where he grew up and graduated from Viroqua High School. He met Marlene Eide in March of 1957 and that October, they were married. They spent the next 59 years together, raising a family and farming the land where they planted their roots. Chester was known for his work ethic, his knowledge in farming, and in particular, his tobacco crop. He was always there to help a neighbor, a friend, or a family member in need. He dedicated his life to his wife, his children, and later, his grandchildren. He was always favored for his playful nature and loved nothing more than to play with and tease his grandchildren. He loved a good debate and would often play the other side just for fun. He was an avid fisherman and would spend a week each year salmon fishing with his son and extended family. He had a mischievous laugh and twinkle in his eye that will never be forgotten. Chester is survived by his wife, Marlene; his children, Craig (Julie) Ostrem and Stephanie (Phil) Neprud, all of Viroqua; a son-in-law, Alan Dutton, of Onalaska; his grandchildren, Thomas, Josh and Haley Ostrem, Zach and Matt Dutton, and Elyse and Lucas Neprud; and a brother, Roger Ostrem of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Hattie (Hass) Ostrem; his step-mom, Gladys Ostrem; a daughter, Lisa Dutton; an infant brother Arnold Ostrem; a sister, Norma Olson; and his mother and father-in-law, Tom and Ann Eide.
