Cary, age 58 of Sparta and formerly of Cashton, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 4, 2013 at his home. He was born on November 6, 1954 to Jerald and Beth (Thomas) Cary. He graduated from Cashton High School and spent 20 years in the United States Marine Corps where he retired as Captain. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School and began private practice in 1995 until becoming an Assistant District Attorney in 1998. In 2003 he was elected as Monroe County District Attorney, a position he held until his death. He was a member of Toastmasters International and recently achieved "distinguished status". He was also an active member of the Dell United Methodist Church. He was involved in many groups and organizations both locally and on a larger level. Dan touched many lives and made a personal connection with countless people. In his own words " I am simply the mouthpiece for good police work. Law enforcement and my office staff make it possible for me to successfully prosecute cases. Criminal prosecution cannot be done by one person, it is truly a team endeavor. Individuals who work in this field do it because they believe in doing whats right and helping others. It is certainly not about the recognition or the paycheck. I am honored and extremely humbled to be recognized by my peers in this way." He is survived by three children: Victoria (Kevin) Asauskas of Woodbury, MN, Zachary Cary of LaCrosse, and Kelly Cary of LaCrosse; three grandchildren: Evan, Ryan, and Landyn; his mother, Beth Cary of Cashton; four siblings: Janna (Mike) Olson, Debra (Tim) Hundt, Anne Cary, and Robert (Heidi) Cary; uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. He is also survived by his co-workers at the Monroe County District Attorneys Office, members of the Monroe County law enforcement family, and his extended USMC brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerald and his grandparents: Josie and Phil Cary and Elva and Earl "Pete" Thomas. Blessed be our memory of Daniel D. Cary. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Dell United Methodist Church. Pastor Karen Bankes will officiate.
