Darlene R. Hysel

June 26, 1939 — December 30, 2022

Darlene Rae (Miller) Hysel passed away peacefully mid-afternoon December 30, 2022.

She was born June 26, 1939, to Agnes and Fay Miller who raised their family in the Ottervale area. She was a graduate of the La Farge High School’s Class of ’57. Darlene was crowned Queen of their junior prom, and married her King, Charles Hysel, after they graduated. Family and friends delighted in giving them a Shiveree and they celebrated 62 anniversaries thereafter.

The couple soon made farming their livelihood and lived in the Tunnelville area most of their lives, interrupted by a year on a farm in the Janesville area and about 10 years in Illinois.

Darlene was a hard worker her entire life. In addition to farming and being a homemaker, she would flush mink for an area mink rancher, and she had a number of factory jobs over the years including at Decamet, O’Brien Brothers and Rockwell International in Gardner IL.

It was then a move back to Tunnelville. Charles had become employed in OTR truck driving and not liking being alone nor being separated, Darlene made her next career move – she obtained a CDL license, a great accomplishment for a woman at 65! This allowed her the ability to travel with Charles and they became Team drivers under Tri-State Expedited. She finally was able to go far and wide and see many cities and sights; she loved that!

Other enjoyments were gardening, canning, cooking, baking, reading, watching Brewers and Packers games. All the hired farmhands would confirm she’s a great cook and all the deer hunters who gathered at the farmhouse each year could attest to her hospitality. Her homemade cinnamon rolls were to live for, and oh so many cakes and pies and bars, too!

Darlene is survived by five of her six children: Steven (Barb Edwards) Hysel, La Crosse; Pamela Hysel, La Farge; Douglas (Kathie) Hysel, Hillsboro; Carl Hysel, Sylvan; Sandra Hysel, Sparta. Sisters and Brother: Anna Rose Collas, Sun Prairie; Minnie Lou Provenzano, Dowagiac MI; Karen Waddell (Lloyd Hargis), Janesville; Bernie (Patty) Miller, La Farge. Brothers/Sisters-in-Law: Ronald & Annette Hysel, Hillsboro; Gloria Rice, Mars Hill NC; Jock & Fran Hysel, La Crosse; Joyce Hysel/Clive Campbell, La Farge. Surviving Grandchildren are Alex Hysel, Holly Hysel, Nichole (Phil) Benson, Jonathon Hysel, Eric & Caleb Hysel, Anthony, Jordan & Bryant Hughes, and Kesha Blaha. Survivors also include Great-Aunt Florence Wilkison, 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and “greats,” plus many friends, especially loyal friends Cookie Potter and Janet Williams.

Preceding her in death were Husband, Charles; Son, K.C. Hysel; a sister, Marilyn Ernst; a brother, Larry Miller; Brothers/Sisters-in-Law George Collas, Floyd Waddell, Ralph Provenzano, Harvey “Skip” Ernst, Danny Hysel, Charlotte Hysel and Bob Hysel; Grandson Joshua McCauley; Nephews David Waddell, Darrin Waddell, Jeff Collas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kickapoo Haven Meal Site, Lawtown Memorial Library, or the La Farge Volunteers.

Blessed be the memory of Darlene Hysel.
