Donald Clayton Alderman passed away at Oakwood Nursing Home, Madison, Wis. on June 29, 2005 In Memory Of:Donald Clayton Alderman1916 - 2005Donald Clayton Alderman passed away at Oakwood Nursing Home, Madison, Wis. on June 29, 2005. He was born Nov 24, 1916 in Clinton Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin. His parents were Oakie and Jennie (Hughes) Alderman. He was raised on a tobacco and dairy farm and was the youngest in a family of three boys. While growing up he enjoyed working with his father in the woods and in the bee yard at home and for the neighbor. As a young man he worked in the CCCs, a commercial apiary at Bloomingdale and was next employed in wiring of rural properties on the REA lines. He enlisted into the Army July 17, 1941 and was trained as a range finder for anti aircraft and for cold weather deployment at Fort Preble, Maine. He was stationed with the US encampment that replaced the British in Iceland where he was on the ski patrol and the camps electrician. He was promoted to Staff Sgt. in charge of the transportation platoon for headquarters of 8th Army where he saw much of Europe after liberation. Don attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and UW Farm School under the GI bill. He was married to Alice Rudrud on Dec 12, 1946 and the couple had four children. Donald was a farmer and electrician in Vernon County for seventeen years before he moved to Madison with his family in 1965 so Alice could attend Library School. He worked at Fish Building Supply for the next sixteen years before retiring. During his retirement, he continued to make frequent trips to Vernon County to care for the farm, to fish the streams of the Kickapoo, and hunt its hills for small game, turkey, and deer.
