Doris A. Erickson, age 88 of Viroqua, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Doris Arlene (Thurin) Erickson, age 88 of Viroqua, died October 19, 2010 at Vernon Manor. She was born May 10, 1922 on the Dr. Christian Christianson farm near Retreat to Rudolph and Anna (Anderson) Thurin. Doris was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua by Pastor D.T. Borgen and on April 15, 1942 she married Ernest Charles Erickson. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2007. Doris and her brother Norman walked state Hwy 56 from their family home at the Bishop Branch farm to Immanuel Lutheran Church for confirmation classes. Together she and Ernest farmed the family farm on Dach Ridge until 1985. In January of 2006 they moved to the Vernon Manor for health reasons and made their home in room #223. After Ernest died, she helped her roommates learn the rituals of nursing home living, and during the decline of her roommates health, would pray the Lords Prayer with them. Doris will be remembered by all for the delicious and plentiful meals she would serve, for the different pastries, cakes and cookies always ready to be served, and the thousands of lefse she made through the years. Doris is survived by four sons: Arnold (Cindy) of Stoddard, Arden of Janesville, Donald and Dean (Elizabeth) of Viroqua; daughter-in-law, Mary Erickson of Greensboro, NC; fourteen grandchildren: David of Texas, Dodi (Clay) of Wendell, NC, Katie (Lucas) of Greensboro, NC, Brian of Chicago, IL, Kristin (Robert) of Greensboro, NC, Keith of Le Center, MN, Karl (Robyn) of La Crosse, Brenda (Jesse) of Madison, Amy of Broadhead, Rhonda of Janesville, Chad and Jason of Onalaska, Brett and Justin of Milton; seven great-grandchildren: Melissa and Ashley of Raleigh, NC, Dylan of Wendell, NC, Molly and Avery of Greensboro, NC, Luke of Madison, and Rachel of Richland Center; one great-great- grandson, Aiden of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Elaine Broadhead; four sisters-in law: Lola Lewis, Rachel Bailey, Lois Reed and Shirley Thurin; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest on June 5, 2007; one son, E. Lee, May 19, 2007; three brothers: Norman, Conrad and Raymond Thurin; and one sister, Maxine (Thurin) Davis; two sisters-in-law: Eva Thurin and Mabel Thurin. In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be made to the Liberty Pole Cemetery or donors choice. The family wants to thank Vernon Manor for the years of loving care Doris received and the weekly visits from the members of the Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Northwest Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Donald Greven will officiate with burial in the Liberty Pole Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday at the church from noon until the time of service. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
