Doris M. Ames, 82, of Retreat died Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Doris M. Ames, 82, of Retreat, WI died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Doris was born on June 29, 1929 to Thomas and Addie (Sorrem) Lewison in Vernon County. She was baptized at home and on May 30, 1942 she was confirmed at Franklin Lutheran Church. On January 22, 1951 she was united in marriage to Verlyn Ames in Madison, WI. Doris and Verlyn settled in Retreat, started their family and owned and operated Ames Feed Store. They farmed there for several decades. Doris and Verlyn earned a reputation of always being fair and honest in their business dealings. For many years Doris and Verlyn organized and ran the Horse Show during the Retreat Worlds Fair. Doris truly looked to her God, church, family, friends and neighbors to color her life. She enjoyed dancing, social events, photography (she was known as the family photographer), fishing, playing cards and she certainly knew her way around a computer. She was a faithful member of the Retreat United Methodist Church and served as the Sunday School Superintendant for many years. Doris is survived by her loving husband, Verlyn; her son Daniel (Barbara); grandchildren Sarah Stuber, David Stuber, Benjamin (Crystal) Palmer; great-grandson Riley Stuber; siblings Joan Potts, Arnold Lewison (Martha Burns), Catherine (Tilmer) Ofte; David Lewison, Mike & Mary Christopherson, Linda Servais, Rodney (Deb) Ofte, and many other nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by two of her sons, Brent and Jeffrey; her parents; a brother Tilmer (Ellen) Lewison; brothers-in-law Olaf Gronvold and Oliver Potts; Father and Mother in-Law Chester and Wilma Ames; a very special Aunt Mabel Warren; and Brother and Sister-in-Law Robert & Phyllis Kutschenreuter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2012 at Retreat United Methodist Church in Retreat, WI. Pastor Laverne Larson will officiate with burial in Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat, WI. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (Hwy 56) in Viroqua, WI. Family and friends may also call on Friday from 10 to 11 am at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorial contributions may be made to the family. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
