Dorothy Ames, 99, of Viola, died Friday, March 10, 2017. Dorothy H. Ames, 99, of Viola, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Schmitt Woodland Hills. She was born on May 26, 1917, the daughter of Richard and Hazel (Nevel) Craig in Dayton township in Richland Center. As a young lady she took an active role in helping her mother with two nephews, Keith and Kenneth Craig. Dorothy married Gifford Kidd and took the role of mother to his children: Marilyn, Kathleen, Myron, and Keith Kidd. Dorothy and Gifford added Duane and Lavina to the family. Gifford died in 1947. Dorothy continued to raise the family and very much appreciated the help from her brother Melvin (Lavina) Craig. After the four children finished high school she married Lawrence W. Ames on February 22, 1951. To their union was born Delores, Dorsey, and Danny. Dorothy loved children and was an accomplished homemaker, baking, cooking, canning, and nurturing children. Dorothy, Lawrence, and family lived on a farm near Viola until they moved to the new home in Viola on February 22, 1955. They continued farming until the time of Lawrences death on December 14, 1982. Dorothy enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. The Mt. Nebo Rebecca Lodge became a part of Dorothys life as she served in many offices along with being a past Noble Grand. The good work of the order was a pleasure to her along with the many friendships. The projects of her church circle brought her great pleasure. Dorothy remained in her home well into her nineties, until she needed more assistance and became part of the Schmitt Woodland Hills Community in Richland Center. Dorothy is survived by daughters: Marilyn Scarbrough of Montgomery, IL, Lavina Campton, and Delores (John) Rydberg both of La Crosse, WI; sons: Duane (Jean) Kidd of Janesville, WI, Dorsey, and Danny (Jody) Ames both of Viola, WI; a special nephew, Keith (Joyce) Craig of Richland Center, WI; daughter-in-law, Gerry Kidd of Antigo, WI; son-in-law, Jim Abel of Montgomery, IL; sister-in-law, Carol Craig of Ontario, WI; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by, her parents; husbands: Lawrence Ames, and Gifford Kidd; sister, Zula (Clarence) Huffman; brothers: Melvin (Lavina), Raymond (Eileen), Vernon (Sara), and Gale Craig; a special nephew Kenneth Craig; daughter, Kathleen Abel; sons: Myron (Shirley) Kidd, and William Keith Kidd; grandsons: Quint Lee Campton, and Gifford Kidd; and sons-in-law: Doc Scarbrough, and Chet Pflueger. The family extends a special thank you to Schmitt Woodland Hills for the wonderful care in maintaining mothers quality of life with dignity. Blessed be our memory of Dorothy H. Ames. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the Viola United Methodist Church. Pastor Larry Stegall will officiate with burial to follow in the Viola Cemetery.
