Dorothy E. Krause, age 89 of the Westby / Viroqua area, died Thursday, August 2, 2007. Dorothy E. Krause, age 89 of the Westby / Viroqua area, died Thursday, August 2, 2007. Dorothy was born January 6, 1918 to Carl and Mary (Stephan) Krause in the Township of Bergen, Vernon County, WI. She attended Oak Ridge and Davis rural schools graduating from Viroqua High School in 1934 and Vernon County Normal School in 1935. She obtained her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from UW-LaCrosse. She taught 25 years in the rural and state graded schools of Vernon County, one year in the Rural Room of Campus School at UW-LaCrosse, and 20 years at Jefferson Elementary School in LaCrosse. During that time she also conducted workshops at state and national teacher conventions for Motor Perceptual Movement Patterns. Dorothy belonged to the LaCrosse and Vernon Retired Educators, Norskedalen, Senior Citizens, and the Vernon County and Westby Historical Societies. She retired from teaching in 1980 and since has been a "full-time" volunteer. She was the first woman director on the board of the Vernon Electric Cooperative, serving from 19922001. She helped start and was Superintendent of the Antiques Department at the Vernon County Fair for six years. Dorothy also loved animals. For many years she helped give free pony and burro rides and exhibits at the fair. She cared for the animals for the Live Nativity shown at Christmas time for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church of Viroqua since 1926. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Lorraine Curti; her sister-in-laws, Anna Mae Krause and Lucille Krause; 22 nieces and nephews and their families; and her cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Charles; three nephews and one niece; and her aunts and uncles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Viroqua. Father Robert J. Cook will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call from 58 p.m. on Friday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 West Decker (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. (Due to road construction, please use the parking lot entrance block south of Hwy 56.) Friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy would have preferred memorials to a charity of the donors choice. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
