Edna Mae Scoville, age 92 of Red Mound, rural DeSoto, died Saturday, July 11, 2009. Edna May Scoville, age 92 of Red Mound, rural DeSoto, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born May 31, 1917 to Louis and Elizabeth Borth Fradet in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. As a young woman she worked in Milwaukee. On December 30, 1936 she married Edward Arthur Scoville, Sr. at St. James Catholic Church in Rising Sun. Edna and Edward became the parents of six children: Edward Scoville, Jr. (deceased in 1993), Carol Scoville, Ruth (Tom) Reese, Jeanne Scoville, Edna Anne Schoville, and Linda Role. Edna and Ed had eighteen grandchildren and thirty one great-grandchildren.Edna and Ed began farming near West Prairie on the Christiansen farm. Next they had two dairy farms near Retreat, where their children grew up. There they maintained a herd of Holstein cattle. Later they raised purebred Black Angus cattle near Red Mound. They always worked hard and sacrificed to provide all their children with a good education. Edna continued to raise Black Angus herself after Ed died in 1992.Activities that Edna enjoyed were teaching religion to children at Sacred Heart Church in DeSoto, working in womens auxiliary groups at St. James and Scared Heart, helping her children with 4-H cattle, being in Homemakers Club and Birthday Club in her neighborhood, and just being an all around good neighbor. Edna and Ed Maintained a home always most generously open to all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, bird watching, and especially seeing all the birds visiting her feeders in the winter.Edna enjoyed travel from coast to coast, to Quebec, Mexico, Europe, and especially her trips with Ed in the western states.Edna has passed on a legacy of love and enthusiasm for nature and animals, especially horses, cattle and dogs. She will be remembered for her bright smile, most kind and generous loving heart, warm and motherly hugs, and exemplary dedication to her family, extraordinary willingness to sacrifice for the happiness and good of others, her deep and strong faith and love of God.Edna was a descendant of Jean Fradet, an early founding resident of Quebec; the Borths from Griefenberg, Pomerania; the Hazens and other early residents of New England and Wisconsin including the Hopkins and Cooke families who came on the Mayflower. She is the great granddaughter of Fredrick Ferdinand Fradet who was an early Wisconsin physician from Montreal.Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa. Father Roy Witucki will celebrate the Mass with burial in the Walnut Mound Cemetery at Retreat. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 320 Main St (Hwy 82) in DeSoto. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of DeSoto is serving the family.
