Edward Carl Abt, 85, of Viroqua, Wisconsin, died on February 27, 2014. Edward Carl Abt, 85, of Viroqua, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2014, at The Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua, surrounded by his family and friends. Edward was born October 23, 1928, in Ringle, Wisconsin, to Stephen and Alma (Dellmann) Abt. He married his beloved wife of 62 years, June Mercedes Sorenson, on July 23, 1951. Edward and June farmed in Ringle until 1966 when he moved his family to Santa Ana, California. There he worked as an A Machinist in the aerospace industry until his retirement. After retiring, Edward and June returned to Wisconsin, living first in La Farge, then moving to Viroqua, where he enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Edward is survived by his wife and his twelve children: David (Debra) Abt of Viroqua; Faith (Karl) Voehl of Grants Pass, OR; Susan (Frank) Scharlach of San Jose, CA; Mary (Kenn) Young of Orange, CA; Steven Abt of Viroqua; Patrick (Marina) Abt of Viroqua; Nancy (Bryan) Sheets of Hemet, CA; Bruce (Sherrie) Abt of Wausau, WI; Barry Abt of Albuquerque, NM; Lisa (Brian) Guillot of Idyllwild, CA; Tammy (James) Kent of Homeland, CA; Alan Abt of Madison, WI. Edward is also survived by his thirty-three grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Barbara) Abt of Ringle; sister Doris (William) Small of Anaheim, CA; sister-in-law Julie Abt of Rib Mountain, WI; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by dear family friend of sixty years, Mae Morien. Edward was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Abt; great-granddaughter Forrest Lorraine Arritt; niece Robin Abt; father-in-law and mother-in-law Edwin and Esther Sorenson; sisters-in-law Carol Przybylski and Ruth Christiansen; and best friend of sixty years, William Morien. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Norseland Nursing Home, where Edward lived for over a year, Vernon Memorial Hospital, and The Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care for the loving care given to Edward and wonderful accommodation provided to the family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Viroqua. Monsignor Francis Abuah Quansah will celebrate the Mass with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends are invited for visitation on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. with a Scripture Wake Service at 3:30 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby.
