Elaine Mae Steenberg

Elaine Mae Steenberg, age 77 of Westby, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, May 30, 2006 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua where she had resided for the past year. Elaine was born on March 6, 1929 in Vernon County, Wisconsin to Ed and Minnie (Karlstad) Blihovde. On January 24, 1953 she was united in marriage to Howard "Hubby" Steenberg. Over the years, Elaine had many jobs both formal and "informal". She worked at the Westby Locker Plant, Jefsons IGA and at Norseland Nursing Home as Housekeeping Manager for many years, as well as did babysitting, home health care and over the years, provided her Norwegian baked goods for various community events, county REA meetings and other requests. Elaine was an outgoing and fun loving person who was often overheard speaking Norwegian to those she knew well. She loved to bake, "putter in her yard with her flowers" and was especially fond of raising African violets. She was a member of the Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and the WELCA. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Kevin Steenberg of Westby, Julie (David) Koch of Minnetonka, MN; and Jan Steenberg of Westby; three grandchildren: Mitchell and Natalie Koch and Dylan Steenberg; as well as two sisters: Olive (Kenneth) Rudie of Coon Valley and Marilyn (Roger) Stigen of LaCrosse. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Minnie as well as her sister, Eunice Peterson. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Country Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Westby. Pastor Julie Wollman will officiate with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Friends may also call at the church on Friday after 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials be provided to either: Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, the Upper Coon Valley Lutheran Church, or the Vernon Manor Nursing Home.
