Elizabeth Ann (Mezera) Scheckel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on August 21, 2025 at Creamery Creek Assisted Living in Viroqua, WI. Born on March 18, 1932, in Bridgeport Township, Wisconsin, Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles and Lucy Mezera. Her father shoveled two feet of snow for the doctor to get to their house for the birth.

After graduating from Prairie du Chien High School in 1950, Elizabeth attended La Crosse State Teacher’s College and taught grades 1-8 at a Country School for 2 years. She was known for her patience, kindness, and dedication to her students.

Elizabeth married the love of her life, Paul Scheckel, on June 3, 1954, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. They lived on Wauzeka Ridge before moving to Soldiers Grove in 1958. They shared a passion for farming and woodworking projects. Elizabeth also had a talent for sewing, quilting, playing cards with friends, and creating beautiful cakes for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries.

Elizabeth will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her strong work ethic, and her creative spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and love that will be cherished by all who knew her.

She is survived by five children: Paula (Claude) Olson of Wild Rose, WI, Ruth (Gerard) of Soldiers Grove, WI, Clara Scheckel of Menomonee Falls, WI, Donald (Martha) Scheckel of Beltsville, MD and Vincent (Sally) Scheckel of Rochester, MN; 8 grandchildren: Luke (Patricia) Olson, Emily (William) Stewart, Mariah (Benjamin) Harris, Elizabeth (Aden) Nofsinger, William (Kassie) Scheckel, Nicholas Scheckel, Zachary Scheckel and Jessica Scheckel (fiancé Adam Millburg); 13 great grandchildren: Samuel and Zoe Olson; Everly, Sloane and Audrey Stewart; Isadora, Ronan and Ada Harris; Melanie, Barrett and Declan Nofsinger; Shae and Caelyn Scheckel; 2 sisters-in-law, Charlotte Scheckel and Beverly Scheckel, 1 brother-in-law, John Stern and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Scheckel; her parents Lucy and Charles Mezera; an infant son-Isidore; an infant granddaughter-Jessica Allison Olson; an infant great-granddaughter – Esther Elizabeth Stewart; Brothers and their wives Clem and Catherine Mezera, Dan and Phyllis Mezera, Chad and Pat Mezera, Wenceslaus and Sharon Mezera; Sisters and husbands Mary and Harry Shedivy, Monica and Lawrence Bay, 6 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law and their spouses.

She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

We wish to thank Creamery Creek Assisted Living and St Croix Hospice for their kind and excellent care.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, rural Soldiers Grove. Father Tom Huff, will officiate, along with Monsignor Roger Scheckel, her nephew. Friends may call at Vosseteig Funeral Home, Gays Mills, WI beginning at 4:00 p.m. concluding at 7:00 pm on Thursday, August 28. Additional visitation will be held Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Creamery Creek Assisted Living in Viroqua, WI, St. Croix Hospice or St. Philip’s Catholic Church.
