Elnor "Al" Haugen

July 7, 1923 — December 26, 2024

Coon Valley - Elnor "Al" Haugen, a cherished husband, stepfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2024, at the age of 101 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Born on July 7, 1923, in Coon Valley, to Sigurd and Minnie (Holen) Haugen, Al's life was marked by dedication, service, and a gentle spirit that touched the hearts of all who knew him.

His early years were spent in the nurturing community of Coon Valley, where he attended local elementary school and graduated from Westby High School. His commitment to his country was evident early on as he served with distinction in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Stationed in Africa, Al played a crucial role in the assembly of over 3,000 fighter planes, including P-38's, P-47's, and P-63's. His meticulous work and deep knowledge of these aircraft were instrumental to the war effort. Returning home honorably discharged just before Thanksgiving in 1945, Al's service to his nation remained a defining chapter of his life.

After the war, Al furthered his education and embarked on a career that showcased his keen eye for detail and his steadfast work ethic. He began as an auditor for the Farmer's Union Co-Op, later joining Trane in La Crosse, where he dedicated twenty years before moving on to Norplex for an additional two decades. Even with a demanding career, Al found time to work on his farm, cultivating both the land and a legacy of hard work.

Al's commitment to his community was unwavering. He devoted countless hours to volunteering at Norskedalen and the Westby Historical Society. His dedication to service was further exemplified by his lifetime membership in the Coon Valley American Legion Post #116 and his active participation in the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. On April 17, 2018, Al married Helen Holen, and together they shared a life of love and companionship.

Beyond his professional and service endeavors, Al had a passion for farming, an activity that kept him connected to his roots and the earth he cherished. He also enjoyed bowling, a pastime that brought him joy and friendly competition. His love for travel took him to Norway, where he explored his heritage and the beauty of the Scandinavian landscape.

Al was a man of loving kindness, gentle demeanor, and courageous spirit. These qualities were the bedrock of his character and were evident in every aspect of his life. He approached each day with a quiet strength that inspired those around him.

Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Haugen; his stepsons, Mike (Judy) Holen and Ron Holen; and several cousins who will miss his presence deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice (Steenberg) Haugen; and his brother, Raymond Haugen.

A gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Full military honors will follow. Al will be laid to rest at Westby Coon Prairie Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
