Eugene Bud Bekkedal

Eugene "Bud" Bekkedal, age 80 of Viroqua, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Eugene "Bud" Bekkedal, 80, of Viroqua died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at his home, in the presence of his family, after a long and private struggle with cancer. Bud was born in Timber Coulee on October 9, 1929, to Christian and Magda (Amundson) Bekkedal. He attended Rognstad Ridge rural school and graduated from Westby High School. On June 18, 1949, Bud was united in marriage to Frances Ostrem. He worked for the City of Viroqua for over 50 years, which were spent as Street Superintendent, City Treasurer, Assessor and Building Inspector. He served on the Vernon Memorial Hospital and Foundation Boards as well as the Hospice Advisory Board and was a member and past Council Member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua for over 35 years. Bud was also very active in the community including the Viroqua Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce and Planning Commission, Vernon County Board, Cemetery Board, Eagles Club and the Lions Club.Bud loved gardening, especially flowers; was an avid Brewers, Badger and Packer fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing.Bud is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances; his children: Steven (Julie Mills) Bekkedal of Viroqua, Brian (Cindy Juno) Bekkedal of Viroqua, Amy (Mike) Simonis of Milwaukee; grandchildren: Matthew (Marni) Bekkedal, Angella (Jason) Dobbs, Lauren Stoltz Amanda (Justin) Running; great-grandchildren: Dalton Dobbs, Lukas, Kara Bekkedal, Remington, Hudson, and Annika Running; sister, Lorraine Schroeder; sister-in-law, Violet Bekkedal; brother-in-law, Glen Everson; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends; and his special friends, Dale and Joyce Rood, and Bernard and Lottie Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jewel in 1973; siblings: Hilmer "Ham" Bekkedal, Gerda Jothen, Clara Aspenson, Minola Brye, Norman Bekkedal, Muriel Everson, Clifton Bekkedal and an infant brother.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker Street, (Hwy.56) in Viroqua and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. "For him serving the community wasnt just a job, it was a way of life. His contributions and his friendship meant a lot to those with whom he served, as well as to his family. He will be remembered by all of us as supporter and friend." In lieu of flowers and plants memorials may be made to the Vernon Memorial Hospice House.The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
