Eugene Johnson was born April 15, 1945, in La Crosse, WI to Orville and Beatrice (Stafslien) Johnson. He passed away on January 26, 2022, with his wife Bunnie and children by his side. Eugene graduated from Westby High School in 1963. He proudly served his country in the National Guard from 1964 to 1970; serving with several friends from the area. On December 10, 1966, he married Bunnie (Volden) Johnson. Eugene Johnson was an accomplished welder for Trane Company for 43 years. A highlight of his career was being chosen by Trane to travel to Algeria and train welders. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 202, being post commander for 17 years and 5 years as post adjutant. He belonged to the Friends of Chaseburg, Lions, Norsemen Booster club, and church council. He coached the local girls’ softball team for years. Throughout the years, Eugene enjoyed sports, particularly Westby football, the Green Bay Packers, and Wisconsin Badgers. He enjoyed gardening, the wildlife, deer hunting with his family, and many trips to Minocqua with family and friends. Eugene’s two sons, Phil and Josh, were a continual source of pride for him. Their continued success is a testament to Eugene’s presence and guidance in their lives. Eugene leaves behind his wife Bunnie; his son Phillip (Joanne); his grandchildren, Alex, Thomas, and Michaela; his son, Joshua (Carolyn); his sisters, Joan Heller and Bonnie (Dean) Peterson; brother Rick (Ethel) Johnson; sister-in-law, Donna Johnson; Eugene’s –in-laws; Kathy Volden, Judy (Jon) Koula, Vickie Volden, Cheryl (Morris) Proctor, Marla (Tom) Jones; Eugene’s nieces and nephews; Lisa Bergum, Tom (Svala) Heller, Jennifer Kolve, Troy (Shannon) Johnson, Nick Johnson, Tina (Joe) Kagel, Emily (Cecil) Dayton, Jeff (Connie) Brueggen, Deb (Tim) Higley, Lynn Kloety, David (Amy) Brueggen, Eric (Tammy) Brueggen, Jill (Dave) Hengel, Kelsey Koula, Krista (Mike) Woodring, Aaron Volden, Heath Proctor, Jared Proctor, Cole Proctor, Seth (Jackie) Scholl, Jessica Scholl, Dylan Jones, Devon (Alex) Jones-Fitchler; many great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Beatrice (Stafslien) Johnson; his brother, Michael Johnson; nephews, Andrew Peterson and Daniel Koula; niece, Kaetlyn Johnson; brother-in-law Marvin Heller; and Father and Mother-in-law, Otis and Opal Volden. The family would like to thank the staff at Gundersen Health System for the care and compassion shown during his battle with Covid. Also, a special thanks to Drs. Solum and Siddiqui for the care they provided over the years to help Eug live a good life as long as possible. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m.until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Additional visitation will be held Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post 202 or Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
