Eugene Leo Massie (Gene), 75 of Flat Rock, N.C. died Friday October 20, 2006 in Hendersonville, N.C. Gene was born December 3, 1930 in Romance, WI to Leo and Myrtle (Davis) Massie. He attended Viroqua High School, served in the 32nd Division of the Army National Guard, was a Boy Scout Leader, and a member of the Jaycees. He married his high school sweetheart in l953, and they moved to South Florida in l958. An award winning landscaper and gardener, he owned and operated Genes Patio and Garden Supply in Delray Beach, Florida for over 15 years. In l986 they moved to Palm Coast, Florida when he established Palm Coast Gardens, and continued working with his green thumb. Over the past 20 years the family has owned and operated Keepsakes Under Glass, manufacturing glass display cases for collectors, now located in Hendersonville, NC. He moved to Flat Rock, NC in 2001. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Fortney Massie of Flat Rock; a son, Steven Massie and his wife, Mary of Hendersonville; two grandchildren, Aimee and Christopher Massie; a sister, Iris Deaver of Chetek, WI; a brother, David Massie of Mesa, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday Oct. 25, 2006 at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Rev. Lindsey Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Viroqua Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice and Pallative Care, 571 S. Allen Road Flat Rock, NC 28731. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
