Floyd Olson

WESTBY Floyd V. Olson, age 94 of Westby, died Saturday, January 28, 2017. Floyd passed away Saturday January 28, 2017 at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, WI. He was born to Selmer and Bella (Brettingen) Olson on November 20, 1922. Floyd attended various grade schools in the Wetsby area including Smith, Clockmaker and Knapp Schools. He was baptized and confirmed at the North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, and has been a lifetime member there. He attended high school for a brief period but was needed on the farm to help his parents meet the demands of farming. He farmed with them until they both passed away and sold the Clinton Ridge farm. Floyd moved to Westby and then was employed at the Stefferud Implement and later at Nelson Agri-Center. He was a dedicated hard worker and enjoyed working well into his 80s. Floyds passion in life was being a pilot and flying airplanes. Floyds toy airplane "the Spirit of St. Louis" given to him by his grandfather, Henry Olson, peaked his interest in flying. It was a treasured toy for Floyd and will remain with him as he enters his heavenly home. Floyd flew many enjoyable hours and at one time owned his own plane. He shared many stories of his flying adventures and gained many friends in the flying community. Floyd was well liked in the community and never spoke a harsh word to or about anyone. He enjoyed speaking and also reading Norwegian. He had a Norwegian accent that showed up when he spoke. His slang words were Jeeminee, Jeepers and Da Heck! Floyd is survived by, his nieces Darlene (David) Starch of Chaseburg, and Linda (Harold) Wemette of LaCrosse, his great nieces and nephews Jon Wemette, Troy (Theresa) Starch, Julie (Joe) Kauss, Jim Wemette and Christine (David) Fox, and eight great-great nieces and nephews and four great-great-great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many cousins in the area. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Leo Olson. The family would like to thank Norseland Nursing Home, Old Times Assisted Living and the Bland Clinic for the excellent care Floyd received. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Amanda Schultz will officiate with burial in the North Coon Prairie Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church from noon until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Blessed be our memory of Floyd V. Olson. 'Fly High' Uncle Floyd.
