Gladys A. Sutterfield

Gladys Sutterfield, age 96 of Viroqua, died Friday, November 16, 2007 Gladys Sutterfield, 96 of Viroqua and formerly of Portland, Oregon passed away Friday, November 16, 2007 at Vernon Memorial Hospital. She has been a resident in the Bethel Home for the past five years. Gladys was born October 7, 1911 at the Pinetree Homestead near the Three Chimneys rural Viroqua. Her parents were Albert and Inga (Christianson) Egeness. She attended the Round Prairie School, graduated from the Westby High School and Vernon County Normal. As a teacher she served the Grandview School in Bergen Township. She kept in contact with many of her pupils for all of the 60 years she lived in Portland. Gladys visited in Portland and returned there to work. She met her husband, Fred Sutterfield, and they were married May18, 1936. Fred served in the service during WWII. Following his service he was a member of the Portland Police Force. Gladys worked in the shipyards while Fred was in the service and after the wars end was a homemaker. She was active in the Garden Clubs and was a wonderful gardener and flower arranger. After Freds retirement they spent time in Arizona near Freds family and made trips to Hawaii, Alaska and Europe. Following her husbands death on April 6, 1996, Gladys returned to Viroqua to be near family. She was again active in the Garden Club, the Westby Senior Citizens and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Living in Viroqua she continued to garden and enjoyed her fruit trees and flowers.Surviving Gladys are her sister: Eunice; brother-in-law: Blair McClurg; sisters-in-law: Edith Egeness of Viroqua; Eunice Egeness of Blair, WI; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Herbert, Albert and Steve.Gladys was very appreciative of her care at the Bethel Home and the family is grateful to the staff for their caring and friendship.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Lindsay Paul Jordan will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before services. Memorial may be given to the Bethel Home or the charity of your choice.The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
