Gloria Ann Ashley, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away at her home on April 28, 2023, in Viroqua, Wisconsin, after a short battle with cancer. Gloria was known for her friendly and funny nature, which endeared her to those who knew her.
Gloria was born on February 15, 1939, to Lillian and Glenn Lawrence in Massena, New York, and she was the youngest of three children. The family lived on various homesteads near the St. Lawrence River, and she often recounted vibrant stories of her days on the island and the farm, spent with her brother, Wayne, her sister, Joann, and later her sister-in-law and best friend, Kate, and nieces, Lynn and Vicky. After graduating from Madrid Central School, Class of 1956, she married Richard Ashley and moved to Clifton Park, New York, to raise her two children. As her children grew older, Gloria began her career at Metropolitan Insurance in Albany, New York, where she worked diligently for many years and created many new friendships.
In 2006, after being a caretaker for her mother, Gloria moved to Viroqua, Wisconsin, to be closer to family. During this time, she thoroughly enjoyed working with her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Bill Kappler, at Reads Creek Nursery, and later with Lisa and granddaughter, Kathryn, at Ewetopia Fiber Shop in downtown Viroqua. She loved having purpose and being surrounded by family in her later years, but also truly enjoyed the peace and quiet of home.
Gloria’s daughters made her very proud, and she took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and thrive. She is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Ashley and Sara Ashley Watterson (Nick); her four cherished grandchildren, Kathryn Ashley-Wright (Keith), Ben Ashley-Kappler, June Watterson, and Reese Watterson; and her great-grandchildren, Stella, Mae, Olan, and Celia; as well as her sister-in-law Kate Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gloria's memory to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Or plant a lilac in her memory, which was her favorite flower. Gloria's passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Per Gloria’s wishes, there will be no service at this time. Online condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
