Gordon Sigfred Sherry

Gordon Sigfred SherrySept 1, 2005 Gordon Sigfred Sherry, age 83 of Westby, passed away in the arms of his family Thursday evening, Sept 1, 2005. He was residing at Old Times Assisted Living in Westby the past year where he had made many new friends and received excellent care. He was born January 30, 1922 to Sidney and Ella (Wee) Sherry. Prior to enlisting in the 5th Air Force, 38th Bombardment Group, Gordon was a cheese-maker in Folsom. After the war he returned to cheese-making and raising tobacco. He married Eunice Ostrem on December 7, 1947 in the Bethel Church and started farming in the Soldiers Grove area. They moved to Westby in 1956 and continued dairy farming with Registered Holsteins until 1978. After retiring at 56 he continued working for 17 years with Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. adjusting crop damage. He then continued working for friend and neighbor David, at Vosseteig Funeral Home for 11 more years. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He served as an usher and was on the memorial committee. He was active in the Coon Prairie 4-H Club, Westby City Council, Tri-State Sire committee, and was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion Post 155 serving as President. He also served as President of the Vernon County Holstein Association and Westby Rod and Gun. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and golfing. Gordon took great pride in his family, farm and community involvement. He is survived by three children: Michael (Brenda) Sherry of Stoughton, Nancy (Reid) Ekern of Viroqua and Arthur Sherry of Westby and his friend Diane Brooks; four grandchildren, Marc (Julie) Sherry of Fitchburg, Paul Sherry of Steamboat Springs, CO., Rebecca (Nicholas) Keaty of Chicago and Greta Ekern of Minneapolis, one great-grandson, Bennett Sherry, and four brothers, Carlyle (Bonnie), Elling (Joanne), La Verne (Aleda) and Phillip (Charlotte) Sherry. In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice in November of 2001.
