Helen N. OlsonAugust 14, 2005 Helen N. Olson, 95 of Viroqua, died Aug. 14, 2005 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born in Mt. Sterling, WI Oct. 29, 1909 to John and Bertha (Quamme) Johnson. On Dec. 9th 1942 she married Orel Gordon Olson in Meza, AZ while he was in the service. Helens great love of cooking and baking led her to many restaurant jobs throughout the country. She worked at the Hillcrest Greenhouse and retired from the Vernon Memorial Hospital as a kitchen aide. She did many years of volunteer work and was a lifetime member of the Viroqua American Legion Auxiliary where she served as president for a number of years and was honored with 50 years of continuous membership. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors, senior citizens groups, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Joanna Circle. Her oldest son, Gary drowned in Janesville, WI on July 13, 1974 at a very young age of 31 years old. She is survived by her son, James (Paula) of Viroqua; her four loving grandchildren: Butch (Diane) of Gays Mills, Kym (Larry) Getter of Viroqua, Danny (Teena) of Westby and Nathan (Barb) of Richland Center; her very special great-grandchildren: Jorrie, Jessie, Jake, Tana, Gavin and Logan; her brother, Knute of Soldiers Grove; two sisters, Ruth Trasser of West Allis, WI, and Esther Warren of Freemont, CA; daughter-in-law, Jan Halverson of Soldiers Grove; and many friends, nieces and nephews who always kept in close contact with her. In addition to her parents and son, Gary, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Orel; four brothers: Joe, Haakon, Hans and Leonard; and two sisters: Bessie and Carrie. Helen will be remembered for her great love of cooking, her many years of volunteer work and the love and care she gave to her brothers and sisters, and the never ending love she had for her grandchildren.
