Herbert O. Burkum, age 89, of Gays Mills, passed away peacefully August 1, 2021. He was born March 16, 1932, to the late Erven and Myrtle (Olson) Burkum in Soldiers Grove, WI. Herbert graduated high school in 1950, and farmed on the family farm until he enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1954. After leaving the Army, he continued to farm on the family farm until he married Donna Jean Pinkham on September 14, 1957, and together they had four children: Mark, Cheryl, Vickie, and Kristina. Herbert and Donna farmed together on the family farm in Gays Mills. Herbert also worked at Nuzum’s Lumber Yard in Gays Mills for a short period of time. Herbert was a musician at heart; he enjoyed singing, playing guitar, and getting together with his band, The Country Kings. He enjoyed trout fishing in the creeks on the family farm in Gays Mills with his children. Herbert had a love for cars, especially collecting them, he didn’t have a favorite because all of his cars were his favorite. He is remembered to have enjoyed picking apples up in the orchards of Gays Mills and worked in the tobacco fields. Before Donna passed, Herbert and Donna were to known to have always been dancing together. Herbert is survived by his children: Mark (Carmen) Burkum of Fennimore, WI, Cheryl (John) Lopes of Roanoke, TX, Vickie (Brad) Everson of La Crescent, MN, and Kristina Louise Frazier of Gays Mills, WI; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lola (Ronald) Peterson of Gays Mills, WI; and his brother, Rodney (Linda) Burkum of Gays Mills, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, his parents, and his sister, Ellen Kobs. A graveside service will be held Friday, August 13, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the Gays Mills Cemetery.
