Howard R. "Hubby" Steenberg, age 80 of Westby, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Howard R. "Hubby" Steenberg, age 80 of Westby, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Gundersen-Lutheran in LaCrosse. He was born on October 2, 1928 to Sverre and Thelma (Bergum) Steenberg. In 1947 he graduated from Westby High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On January 24, 1953 he was united in marriage to Elaine Blihovde. She preceded him in death on May 30, 2006. He worked as a Buttermaker at the Westby Coop Creamery for over 25 years and then worked at Norplex in LaCrosse for several years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and the Syverson-Funk American Legion Post #155. He had also been a member of the Snowflake Ski Club for over 50 years and had worked on the "chain gang" for Westby High School football games for 25 years. Hubby was an avid sports fan and served as an umpire for the American Legion Baseball Team, and he loved attending and watching the Westby Football Team, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. He is survived by one son, Kevin Steenberg of Westby; two daughters: Julie (David) Koch of Minnetonka, MN and Jan Steenberg of Westby; three grandchildren: Mitchell and Natalie Koch and Dylan Steenberg; one sister, Ione ("Bud") Hauser of Cashton; his brother-in-law, Harold Hagen of Westby; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Hagen and Lillian Hagen; and four brothers: Clifford, Milton, Kenneth and Roy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Hallemeier officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday after 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
