Irving Posner Leif

May 20, 1947 — April 13, 2025

Irving Posner Leif, a man of profound intellect and boundless passion for literature, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Born on May 20, 1947, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Irving's journey was one marked by academic excellence and a deep-seated love for the written word.

Irving's educational pursuits were nothing short of remarkable. He began his academic journey at Bethel College in Tennessee, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. His thirst for knowledge led him to Purdue University, where he obtained his master’s degree, and later to Temple College in Philadelphia, where he was awarded his PhD. In total, Irving earned five degrees, including postdoctoral work at the New School University in New York, a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and scholarship.

Professionally, Irving's career was as distinguished as his education. He served as an assistant professor at the University of Evansville in Indiana, where he inspired countless students with his insights and dedication to sociology. His academic contributions extended beyond the classroom; he authored five books that enriched the field and left a lasting impact on his peers and readers alike.

Irving's love for books was not confined to his professional life. He made book collecting his life's focus, amassing an impressive collection that was both his pride and joy. He felt happiest when he was with his books, surrounded by the knowledge and stories they contained. This passion for books eventually led him to move to Viroqua around 2011, where he worked at Driftless Books, a haven for fellow bibliophiles.

In addition to his work at Driftless Books, Irving also contributed to the local community by working for a CSA farm, further demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the Viroqua area. His presence at the Viroqua Food Co+op in the mornings became a familiar and welcome sight, where he enjoyed engaging in conversations with friends and neighbors.

A huge football fan, Irving's love for the New York Giants was well-known among his friends and colleagues. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious, and he could often be found sharing his insights and excitement with anyone willing to engage in a conversation about the latest game.

As we bid farewell to Irving, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of passion, learning, and the joy of sharing knowledge with others. His memory will continue to inspire, and his spirit will remain a guiding light for the many lives he touched. Irving Leif will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the Viroqua Cemetery. A Celebration of Irving’s life will be held at a later date. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
