James L. Rockwell

James “Jim” Rockwell, age 74, of Viroqua passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023. He was born on October 21, 1948, to the late Edward and Kathryn (Dodge) Rockwell in Viroqua. Jim graduated Viroqua High School in 1969, and after graduating, he started working at Dahl Ford in La Crosse by cleaning out used vehicles. After he worked for Dahl, Jim also worked for Buddy Tryggestad in the auto business, worked for two years at Bud Cheese Factory, and then lastly worked for Howard Johnson Enterprise for 24 years until retiring.

Jim enjoyed going to rummage sales, camping, fishing, spending time on the Kickapoo Reserve Area, and telling stories of the past. While he was at Aurora the last year, Jim loved to talk about the places he worked, the people he worked with, and the wild things he did as a young man, especially with his best friend, Todd Widner. Jim was very proud of the fact that he took care of his grandmother at her home until the very end. He enjoyed going to Sunday services at St. Joseph’s the Workman Cathedral with his friend, Brian Bender.

Jim was kind-hearted and always looked out for his housemates. He was polite and always said thank you when he needed a helping hand. Jim enjoyed cheese, cookies, donuts, candy, and waffles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John of Texas; and his grandmother whom he loved dearly.
