James Russell Onshus, 85, formerly of Westby, WI, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Zephyrhills, Florida on May 24, 2025. Born on November 25, 1939, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Olaf Onshus of Norway and Ivy Thoresen of Coon Valley, Wisconsin, James was a man deeply rooted in his heritage and values. He attended Oium Country School in Timber Coulee and later graduated from Westby High School in the class of 1957, demonstrating early on the intellect and determination that would define his life.

Following high school, James proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1963, where he mastered the operation of mainframe computers, a skill that would shape his professional journey. After his military service, he settled on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, where he operated the computer at A.C. Nielsen Co., the renowned TV and radio ratings firm. His work was not only a testament to his technical prowess but also to his commitment to excellence in his field.

He and his best friend Amy Lou spent many years together having good times in Chicago. Both being good dedicated Green Bay Packer fans, they would drive north to the Wisconsin border on Sundays to cheer on their team.

In 1972, James's life was further enriched when he married Amy Lou E. Campbell at St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison, Wisconsin. That same year, the couple relocated to Madison, where James was employed by the City of Madison, operating the main computer for all city services.

Retirement saw James and Amy Lou return to Westby, Wisconsin, where they had purchased a parcel of the Onshus family farm. They enjoyed 24 winters as snowbirds in Panama City Beach, Florida, forming lasting friendships and creating cherished memories. In 2022, they moved to Zephyrhills, Florida, to enjoy their retirement years in their new home.

Throughout his life, James's adventurous spirit took him and Amy Lou to many corners of the world, including numerous trips to Mexico and Costa Rica, camping with friends in Alaska, and a special month-long visit to his cousins in Norway. His zest for life and his warm, friendly demeanor left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

James is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Amy Lou; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra Onshus, Pat Onshus, Lyle C. (Gerrie) Campbell, Paul J. (Margaret) Campbell, Jeanne M. (Dominick) Tallarico, Karen M. (Thomas) Michalczyk, Debra A. (Richard) Kopacz, Robert A. Campbell, and Christopher I. Campbell; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
